Star Wars Movies Ranked:
In My Opinion

Growing up, I was always a huge Star Wars and Marvel fan. My favorite movies growing up were always the Sam Raimi Spider-man movies and the first 6 Star Wars movies. I am very grateful my dad decided to share them with me. And I love that these stories have been able to grow beyond what they were when I was little. So, I figured that I might as well rank all the Star Wars movies and finally have it written down. So here are all of the Star Wars theatrically released movies ranked from worst to best... In my opinion.

P.S. You are allowed to have a different opinion than mine, that is what something that is some great about Star Wars. Everyone loves different characters and different movies because the galaxy George Lucas invented is just so massive and creative. So here you go, and enjoy!

12. Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Yes, I am one of the people that does not particularly care for The Last Jedi. It really only comes down to two reasons for me.

Number one is what they did to Luke's character. They took him a direction that really just did not seem believable to me. If he was able to believe in Darth Vader (A man that destroyed the entire Jedi order and is the right-hand man of the Emperor), then I think he would have more faith in his nephew that he was trusted to mentor. That being said, I did enjoy when he finally came around in the end and we got a glimpse of him at full Skywalker power. The scene where he faces off with Kylo was actually my laptop screen saver for a couple years.

The second reason I did not care for this movie is the entire cast is essentially limited to their ship the whole movie. This is Star Wars, so where is the world building and the adventure? This may have worked for other types of movies, but it just seemed to fall a bit flat for me.

This movies redeeming factor is that they went all out with Kylo Ren. At least Adam Driver did. His character development was actually really solid. He went from a boy who was living in Vader's shadow to doing the one thing Vader never could do. He killed his master and took over. This movie actually made Kylo my favorite character of the sequels. So in my eyes, this movie was not completely bad, just my least favorite of the entire collection.

11. Solo: A Star Wars Story

This movie was actually better than I anticipated. I thought it was going to be really bad based on the taste that The Last Jedi left in my mouth. But I was actually pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the overall story and I feel like Alden Ehrenreich did a pretty good job portraying a younger Han Solo. The only reason that this movie is so low on this list is that it does not feel completely like a Star Wars movie. It feels like a heist movie and does a great job at it. I simply like the other 10 movies a bit more.

10. Episode I: The Phantom Menace

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEja8DjYZDbRm2g91nkkCc1-D4aMP0QxyNMunUEvDf3WIM-1f3bDZFJAzgOzr5_wbHms8QSN-b1YxL-fnxvyzwGSkAHhJQuvFq6t-Oa6Vnq5vgTBD7lB1kNX14hiRcyBxQwAwxEM3kH_s3_5BT-HXvCjpJOpf2D3QpUAw3u6_Kf8DJkRqdf5I-Qr2H5U8GDoqqXJ6PCYFHvu7LcO=

I have always enjoyed this movie, but never really loved it. I do find myself re-watching this one every so often though. There are moments that I love, that keep me coming back. The pod-racing scene is great, and seeing the dynamic of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan is fun. But the last 20 minutes are definitely the best of this movie. The fight seen with Darth Maul is undoubtedly one of the best fight scenes in all of Star Wars.

9. Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

This was a really entertaining movie and much faster paced than its predecessor. But this is also one of its fallbacks. It felt like 2 movies crammed into one. To me, it really seemed as if they were trying to fix the mistakes of The Last Jedi, all while trying to give the Skywalker saga a grand finale. I commend the effort, but it really ends up missing certain moments because of the over-ambition. A few tweaks and fan-service here and there would have made this a much better movie. Overall, I did enjoy it though. Just not as the grand finale.

8. Episode II: Attack of the Clones

    https://whatsondisneyplus.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Attack-1.jpg

This was the movie that kicked off "my" Star Wars. It brought in the clones and an older Anakin. Yes, there are moments where this movie can fall on its face, but I feel that it has stronger moments that kind of balance it out. We get to see the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin really take hold. Anakin may not be super lovable in this movie, but he becomes one of my favorite characters because of what this movie set up... The Clone Wars. This movie is the root of most of that show and I love seeing where it all essentially kicks off. Plus, the battle on Geonosis is one of the most epic battles in all of Star Wars. It brings the clones in for the first time and we get to see the most Jedi in action ever put to screen. And to top it all off, we get to see Yoda go ham for the first time. Say what you want, but prequels Yoda is a boss.

7. Star Wars the Clone Wars (The movie)

Yes, I did put this on the list. It was actually the very first Star Wars movie I saw in theaters. And I know what you are thinking. This movie was in theaters?

Yeah it was. And I got to see it opening weekend in 2008. I was only 8 years old, so this was a big moment for me. And it was certainly an awesome moment. Sure, the characters sounded and looked a bit different. But I accepted it pretty fast. And I am glad I did because it sparked a new kind of love for Star Wars in my life. I found out there would be a show on Cartoon Network continuing the story. And you can bet your bottom that I watched every episode right when it came on Friday nights.

This was "my' Star Wars. It is the version that I got to grow up watching. This movie is the reason that my favorite characters are Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Plo Coon, and Obi-Wan. I still love Luke, but he is the only one that can stack up to those 4 characters for me now that I have watched 7 seasons of the show.

6. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

 https://allears.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/rogue-one-line-up.jpg

This movie was really entertaining and new. It was a different take on Star Wars that I admired. It still gave me everything I enjoyed about the main movies and created a unique story. I was just bummed I couldn't say my typical line to people trying to avoid spoilers. "Everyone dies". In this case my joke was a reality. And I think that is a large reason it felt so unique. It was dark and yet there was still hope. Plus, we got to see Vader go absolutely berserk on some Rebels. To this day that is still on of my favorite scenes in all of Star Wars.

5. Episode IV: A New Hope

https://prod-ripcut-delivery.disney-plus.net/v1/variant/disney/E45D2A6B9B2282EE77263125A9EA672D71D4FC637AB6743D95472E3646010A21/scale?width=1200&aspectRatio=1.78&format=jpeg

The only reason that this is not higher is that it feels older. I love it because it gave us all Star Wars. But, the effects and story telling are just very different from what I am used to. This is only because it was limited to its time. Maybe I am also spoiled with modern day effects. However, that is not to say it isn't enjoyable. I love the start of Luke's hero's journey. There is a reason that this movie was so successful. It was good. It simply falls this low because the movies were able to get even better.

4. Episode VII: The Force Awakens

https://img.cinemablend.com/filter:scale/cb/0/5/a/9/e/d/05a9ed3cd0132b3a754448838f5de8b46ef66c1b80d3a42910010bb51ccff34c.jpg?fw=1200

This movie is essentially A New Hope but with modern effects. So that is why this movie sits one above it. Basically if it ain't broke, don't fix it. They took what made A New Hope good and just modernized it. And honestly, that was probably the safest bet since there was about a decade of no live action Star Wars. The movies downfall is that it probably played things a bit too safe. But overall, I left the theater super excited for the next episode. I could not wait to see how the story would continue and to finally see Luke on screen again. And well, you know how the rest of the story goes....

3. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

https://www.arthipo.com/image/cache/catalog/poster/movie/1-758/pfilm453-star-wars-poster-image-return-of-the-jedi-yildiz-savaslari-film-movie-posters-1000x1000.jpg

Here is where we enter the movies that have all been my favorite at some point or another. Return of the Jedi was my favorite as a kid. It gave me a ton of action and good story telling. I loved watching Luke, Vader, and the Emperor interact. This was the movie I would re-watch over and over as a kid. And to this day, there is still so much I love about it. The world building is awesome. The climax is fantastic. And Luke is arguably at his best (at least from the movies). Overall, it would be hard for me to ever not love this movie. It has that perfect amount o nostalgia and good story telling to keep me coming back.

2. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

https://prod-ripcut-delivery.disney-plus.net/v1/variant/disney/42552BACCC8411D66BB36B5468FDB11DC8BE4A24676CECB3247515EB2B1682E9/scale?width=1200&aspectRatio=1.78&format=jpeg

This movie is by far the most re-watchable Star Wars movie to me. Yes, there are a few lines that seem out of place. But the action and the plot more than make up for it. This is everything I would want in a Star Wars movie and more. I find it so enjoyable every time I come back to it. Plus, one of my favorite scenes ever is the Obi-Wan and Anakin fight on Mustafar. And my love for the Clone Wars has honestly only enhanced this movie for me. For me, this movie is on a level that only a few movies have ever been- including the #1 on this list.

1. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

https://patch.com/img/cdn20/users/24509278/20200910/084419/empirestrikesback___10084417136.jpg

Darth Vader becoming the character we know and love today. The introduction of Yoda. Force ghost Obi-Wan. Jedi training. Cloud City, Bespin. Boba Fett, Han frozen in carbonite. Leia and Han's budding romance. Oh and "No, I am your Father". Enough said.

And that concludes my list. I hope you enjoyed. And if you haven't seen some of these movies I highly encourage you do.
